Open letter to LIDL
The Manager
LIDL Supermarket
Hersonissos
Crete
Dear Sir/Madam
COMPLAINT: NO EGGS
On most occassions on visiting your store, I cannot get eggs. It's very frustrating, to say the least! Such a large and professional chain of supermarkets and can't get something as basic as eggs, it's ridiculous. Your supermarket has very good products and economical prices, but your downfall is your inability to supply eggs at all hours of the day.
It's very difficult to find staff to talk to in your supermarket and I don't want to bother the cashier. I managed to speak to one of your staff members, there were actually two of them. The one was very helpful, but the other one made a joke of the whole matter and said that the chickens aren't laying enough eggs (I found that to be quite rude and insensitive). The rude staff member was walking from shelf to shelf with some hand-held computer, checking on what needed re-supplying, I imagine. The other staff member who was helpful, told us that the eggs are on the shelves at about 11:00 a.m and since they don't get enough, they sell-out quickly.
I walk from Anissaras to the LIDL in Hersonissos to do my shopping and 9 times out of ten, I can't get eggs and have to then go to Halkiadakis Supermarket and get them. I like shopping at LIDL and most things about it are good as far as quality and pricing is concerned as I've already mentioned. One more thing, besides the lack of staff and no eggs is that I cannot get a hand-held basket and am forced to get a shopping trolley (I don't always buy many things and a trolley is too big and I also don't always have a coin for the trolley, either).
Thanking you kindly. Take care.
Yours faithfully

My reply:
Thank you for your prompt and professional reply. Apology accepted, no problem, thank you. I understand and appreciate your concerns and aspirations as a company that wants to compete fairly and expects devotion and responsibility from its staff.
I appreciate your efforts and I'm sure that the problem will be resolved and we'll all benefit from it.
I was at your supermarket in Hersonissos today, there were eggs there and I bought many other things there too, as I usually do. Your products are good and pricing reasonable and affordable (good value for money). Take care.
Kind regards

Lidl supermarkets have become extremely popular in Crete, they seem to be everywhere. Fortunately for us, being budget minded, there was a Lidl on the outskirts of Hersonissos. Easy to get to in the car and plenty of parking (even under sun-canopies!) we were grateful of it's proximity to our accommodation.
What to buy: We bought mainly drinks from Lidl.
What to pay: Fresh milk was much cheaper than other supermarkets but food items were not necessarily cheaper.
Most prices were dearer than in an English Lidl.
Directions: Coming from Iraklion direction, Lidl is on the downhill as you approach Hersonissos and off to the left.
Theme: Food and Drink

What is shopping in Crete like?
In the past 10 years there has been a shopping revolution with the introduction of high turnover supermarkets. Today, Crete's Supermarket chains include: Carrefour, Europe's largest super market group - with a hypermarketin Heraklion The same group includes budget chain, Dia which has Spanish product lines, as well as Champion, in joint venture with the family-owned, Marinopoulos Group. Then, there is Lidl with its German oriented product line. The locally Cretan-owned,Xalkiadakis, Chalkiadakis (Ariadne / Spar) has many store outlets across Crete. In Western Crete, around Chania, is the "seen everywhere" INKA Supermarket chain, part of the General Consumers Federation of Greece (INKA). INKA, with a wide selection of daily necessities you find in any supermarket, also carries a wide selection of local produce from the area especially the wines and cheeses.
