Carob/Haroupia, The Lost Treasure of Crete

Creta Carob, The Lost Treasure of Crete: Source of Health

Carob, also known as St. John's Bread. It's Latin Name, Ceratonia siliqua. The Greeks call it, "Haroupia", amongst other names. (Picture taken from, amazonsday.blogspot.com.

Creta Carob was established in 2006 and started its operations in 2011. It is a family company that main focus is the production of different biological products from the Carob Pods. Creta Carob is located in Crete Island in a little village called Argyroupoli. During our production process we combine ancient procedures with new technologies. Our final products correspond to the regulations of the E.U. and received the bio qualification in Greece and in the E.U. from DIO.

Ancient procedures with new technologies.

Resources

In Crete, the carob trees thrive in difficult soils and like arid conditions that are naturally free of fungus and pests. Thus, the uses of chemical sprays are not necessary on Crete Island. The tree grows 15 m in 50 years. It does not bear fruit for the first 15 years. However, once fruiting, it will yield one ton of beans in one harvest.
Carob pods are harvested in the middle of September. The growing carob pods look like green broad beans but they turn to a dark glossy brown as they age. Each pod can contain up to 15 seeds.

History

Carob has a long history in human consumption. The Greek Theophrastus recorded in 4BC that his fellow Greeks called the carob the Egyptian Fig. There is also evidence that Ancient Egyptians used carob. Both the pods and seeds have been found in Egyptian Tombs. Further, the Romans ate the Carob pods when they were green and fresh for their natural sweetness. Thus, Carob is no newly discovered food. As the founder of Creta Carob, Elias Manousakas states "It is the lost treasure of Crete''.

Cretan Carob

Carob is up to 8% protein. It contains Vitamins A, B, B2, B3 and D. It is high in Calcium, phosphorus, pottasium, Magnesium and contains Iron Manganese, Barium, Copper and Nickel.
We are offering carob products in different shapes and sizes.

Saint Marina the Great Martyr and Vanquisher of Demons

Marina was born in Southern Anatolia, specifically from Pisidia in Antioch, at the end of the third century during the reign of Claudius II (268-270). She was the only daughter of noble pagan parents.

When she was five years old her mother died (some sources say she died shortly after childbirth), and since her father, Aidesios, was too busy carrying out his duties as a pagan priest to care for her properly, he turned her care over to a woman who happened to be a Christian.

This nanny lived in a small town about fifteen miles from where Marina was born. Away from her father’s idols and blasphemous practices her nanny taught her about the Christian Faith. As Marina increased in age, more so did she advance in knowledge, understanding, and compassion. Her faith in the Living God was so great that she desired the difficult path of Martyrdom. She told her father that she wished to become a Christian and to never marry so as to live a life of virginity. Her father despised her for her faith and disowned her as his daughter.

A new governor named Olymbrios was elected for the region and in time began a persecution against all Christians in the area. One day he caught a glimpse of the very beautiful fifteen year old Marina with her nanny. The Imperial Governor Olymbrios, seeing her great beauty, desired her for his wife. When asked her name, homeland, and faith, Marina answered: "My name is Marina; I am the offspring of Pisidia; I call upon the Name of my Lord Jesus Christ." Upon learning that she was a Christian, Olymbrios tried to dissuade her by flatteries, and by threats of torture.

"Nothing Will Separate Me From Christ"

Marina frankly replied to the man: "Have no vain hope for me, O governor, that I might cower before any number of torments. Nothing will separate me from Christ - neither affliction, famine, fire, sword, nor any other harsh tribulation - not even a violent and very painful death. Think not that you will entice me with honors, gold or other wealth, because all these things are perishable and temporal...

An inviting entrance... it says, "please, come in!"

Analipsi Village
The village of Analipsi (i.e. Ascension) is located 20km east of Heraklion and takes its name after the church of the Ascension of Christ. It is located in the center of a fertile valley, cultivated with vegetables and olives. The settlement was called Svouros’ Farm in the early 20th century, after some Turks who had their crops here. Analipsi later was occupied by the the shepherds of Saint George village, in Lasithi Plateau, where the winter is very cold. Thus, they moved their cattle here in winter. Today, the lucky descendants of the shepherds have large properties in the area, with hotels, shops, restaurants and all sorts of tourist facilities.
Analipsi is less developed touristically than the other resorts of the surrounding area and is a favorite destination for families, since the holidays here is peaceful and qualitative. In front of the village, there is a small pier with a picturesque church next to it dedicated to Agia Marina. West of the chapel the coast is rocky, except a small harbor, where a beach is formed. On the other side of the chapel, on the east, you will find the long beach of Analipsis, which is very well organized but open to north winds. The water is not deep and the sand is fine.
In the afternoon you can stroll in the streets of the old traditional village with the beautiful gardens and the traditional stone-paved square. You can also visit the great church of the Ascension, which is four aisled and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Ascension of Christ, the Holy Cross and Saint Efrosinos. The main street of the village runs vertical to the coast and is full of cafes and shops.

Anisaras Beaches

Anisaras beaches | Heraklion | Beaches| Κρήτη | Crete

It has been spread that Anisaras takes its name after the plant anise that abounded in the area. However, anise never existed here and the name comes from a corruption of the word agisaras. Agisaros is one of the Greek names of the plant Cistus creticus (the other name is aladania) that indeed abounds in the area.

Cistus creticus (aladania). Photo taken from alathanos.blogspot.com

The peaceful resort of Anisaras is located 21km east of Heraklion, west of Cape Sarandaris. The area is now full with big hotels, which offer primarily all-inclusive services. In front of the hotels, there are small sandy beaches with rocky seabed. All beaches are well-organized with umbrellas and sun beds, which are offered for free to the customers of the hotels.

The beaches are beautiful, but the seabed is quite rocky. This makes them popular to snorkelers. However, the beach close to Analipsi, the largest in the area, has more sand than the rest ones. From there starts the coastal road of Anisaras, which runs along the coast and stops before the big complex of Anisaras hotels. From there the road continues with south direction and "encircles" the hotels. If you want to swim at the beaches shaped in front of the hotels, you will have to walk along the coast until you find the cove you like. Otherwise, you should ask permission from the hotel guards, to let you walk across the hotels.
In the easternmost point of Anisaras, on Cape Sarandaris, you will find the small chapel of St. George, which is very picturesque and has spectacular views to the bay of Hersonissos. You can reach it either by keeping walking eastwards from the beaches of the hotels or by driving on the road that connects Anisaras withHersonissos Coves. Before the Harbors, you will see a stonepaved footpath heading to the tip of the cape.
In Anisaras you won’t find any structured settlement or village, but only dispersed hotels. Thus, you will not have many options for dining or getting out outside the hotel. Do not worry, because Hersonissos is very close. Access to Anisaras by bus is however a big trouble, as there is no direct route to Anisaras. The buses running to Hersonissos stop about 2km away from the beach and you have to call a taxi.
